C-STAR series: Cross-Linguistic and Multicultural Framework in Aphasia Assessment

On Friday, October 31, Professor Jee Eun Sung gave a lecture at C-STAR (Center for the Study of Aphasia Recovery). Her talk focused on the cross-linguistic and cross-cultural frameworks our lab has applied in aphasia assessment research over the past several years.

Abstract: This lecture delineates a clinical and theoretical framework for assessing people with aphasia (PWA) across diverse languages at the morphosyntactic, lexical-semantic, and phonological levels of processing. It emphasizes that language impairments and their linguistic manifestations are deeply embedded in the linguistic systems individuals used prior to stroke, and that these systems are shaped by cultural and ethnographic factors. The goal is to highlight the cross-linguistic and multicultural considerations essential for developing culturally and linguistically appropriate assessment and treatment approaches for PWA. Specifically, the lecture presents clinical evidence of cross-linguistic differences and cultural influences in naming assessment, interpreting the findings from both clinical and theoretical perspectives. It further extends to comparative analyses of typologically dissimilar language pairs, illustrating differential and shared patterns of difficulty in sentence processing.

초록: 본 강의는 실어증 환자를 대상으로 형태‧통사, 어휘‧의미, 음운 처리 수준 전반에서 여러 언어에 적용 가능한 임상 및 이론적 평가 프레임워크를 제시한다. 언어 손상과 그 표현 양상은 뇌졸중 발병 이전에 개인이 사용해 온 언어 체계에 깊이 기반하며, 이러한 체계는 문화적·민족지적 요소의 영향을 받아 형성된다는 점을 강조한다.

본 강의의 목적은 실어증 평가와 중재를 설계할 때 고려해야 할 핵심적인 비교언어적·비교문화적 관점을 부각하는 데 있다. 특히 이름대기 평가에서 관찰되는 비교언어적 차이와 문화적 영향에 대한 임상적 근거를 소개하고, 이를 임상적 및 이론적 관점에서 해석한다. 또한 유형적으로 상이한 언어쌍을 대상으로 한 비교 분석을 통해 문장 처리 과정에서 나타나는 차별적·공통적 어려움의 패턴을 제시한다.
