BELL Therapeutics and ECHOH Consortium Join Forces to Tackle Hearing Loss and Dementia

On October 14, 2024, BELL Therapeutics, a neuroscience-based digital therapeutics startup, signed a research partnership agreement with the ECHOH Consortium (Enhancing Cognitive Health through Optimal Hearing), launching a collaborative effort to address hearing loss and cognitive decline. ECHOH was selected as a STEAM Global Research Project by the National Research Foundation of Korea and will receive KRW 5.4 billion in funding over the next five years. The consortium aims to improve cognitive health by enhancing hearing function, based on evidence that hearing loss is the most significant modifiable risk factor for dementia among twelve known contributors, as identified by The Lancet.

While early intervention in hearing loss is being explored by some institutions in countries like the United States, few have achieved substantial clinical success to date. To address this gap, the ECHOH Consortium brings together leading Korean researchers in neuroscience, speech-language pathology, biomedical engineering, and artificial intelligence to explore novel strategies for preventing and treating both hearing loss and dementia.

The overall project is led by Dr. Yunseop Lim of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), an expert in auditory neuroscience and healthcare robotics. The first research objective—developing diagnostic and rehabilitative technologies for auditory-cognitive function—is being spearheaded by Professor Jihwan Woo’s team at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), Professor Kyogu Lee’s team at Seoul National University (AI and speech signal processing), and Professor Inyong Choi from the University of Iowa (audiology).

The second objective focuses on diagnosing and rehabilitating language-cognitive function. This part of the project is jointly led by Professor Jee Eun Sung of Ewha Womans University, an expert in speech-language pathology, and Professor Swathi Kiran of Boston University, a leading authority in aphasia rehabilitation.

The final objective involves clinical research to explore the causal relationship between hearing loss and dementia. This segment is led by Professor Il Joon Moon’s team at Samsung Medical Center, experts in hearing aid and cochlear implant treatment. BELL Therapeutics will play a key role in ensuring that the research outcomes are translated into practical applications by developing and commercializing digital healthcare products for clinical and everyday use.

CEO Jae-Eun Lee emphasized that, with the global rise in hearing loss and dementia, this consortium has the potential to offer groundbreaking solutions that can improve patients’ quality of life.

With the involvement of top researchers across multiple disciplines, the ECHOH Consortium is expected to make significant strides in understanding and addressing the complex interplay between hearing loss and cognitive health.

뇌과학 기반 디지털 치료제 개발 스타트업 '벨테라퓨틱스'가 난청 및 인지 건강 개선을 위한 연구 컨소시엄 '에코'(ECHOH, Enhancing Cognitive Health through Optimal Hearing)와 협약을 맺고 공동연구에 나서게 되었습니다. 에코는 청각 기능 개선을 통해 인지 건강을 증진시킨다는 목표로, 한국연구재단의 STEAM 글로벌과제로 선정돼 앞으로 5년간 54억 원의 연구비를 지원받습니다.

의학 저널 란셋에 따르면 난청은 치매를 유발하는 12가지 후천적 요인 중 가장 주요한 요인으로 알려져 있습니다. 따라서 난청을 조기에 중재해 건강한 정신건강을 유지할 수 있도록 하는 접근은 미국을 비롯한 일부 연구기관에서 도전하고 있으나 아직까지 큰 성과를 거둔지 못한 상황입니다. 이에 뇌과학, 언어병리학, 인공지능 등 각 분야 국내 최고의 연구자들이 모여 새로운 방법으로 난청, 치매의 문제 해결에 도전하고 있습니다.

연구개발의 총괄 책임자는 청각 신경과학 및 헬스케어 로봇 분야 전문가인 한국과학기술연구원(KIST)의 임윤섭 책임연구원이 맡습니다. 첫 번째 목표인 청각 인지 기능을 진단하고 재활하는 기술 개발은 의공학 전문가 울산대 우지환 교수팀, 음성신호 인공지능 분야 전문가인 서울대 이교구 교수팀, 미국 아이오와 대학 청각학 분야 전문가인 최인용 교수팀이 담당합니다.

두 번째 목표인 언어 인지기능을 진단하고 재활하는 기술 개발은 저희 신경언어장애연구실의 언어병리 분야 전문가 이화여대 성지은 교수팀과 언어 재활 분야의 대가 미국 보스턴 대학 스왓디 키란 교수가 맡게 되었습니다.

마지막으로 난청과 치매 유발의 인과관계를 밝히는 임상 연구는 보청기 및 인공와우 전문가 삼성서울병원 이비인후과 문일준 교수팀이 담당합니다. 벨 테라퓨틱스는 연구 성과들이 환자들의 실생활과 임상 현장에서 활용될 수 있도록 디지털 헬스케어 제품 개발과 상용화를 맡습니다.
